The Advent of War – A Short Story from my Grandfather
Today, I’m sharing a short (very short) story that my Grandfather wrote called “On the Advent of War”. I found this old story in a photo album at my Uncle’s house and decided I’d like to share it.
This is a love story about a US soldier and Japanese woman in post war Japan. My Grandfather passed away when I was 3 and I had never seen a short story by him before, I have only read letters and poems he wrote to my Grandmother.
My favorite line is the last, which apparently is a Japanese proverb, “Whom the Gods cannot unite on earth, they shall do in heaven”. It was interesting to see his use of language and the way he expressed ideas. I was always told he was a deep thinker and had a tendency toward the arts.
The reason I thought it would be fun to share is because in the not so distant past a thing called the Internet and social media platforms didn’t exist. It made me realize how privileged we all are to be able to share our art, music, writing, creative work at the click of a button.
We can share our vision and creativity and find an audience easier and faster than ever! I am reading this story to honor my Grandfather’s memory and also to honor the family members who had talent and never really nurtured or understood their creative capacities.
I am here to break that cycle, live a creative life in every way I can and to support and inspire others to do so as well.
Enjoy On the Advent of War!
